Wearing plate introduction
Abrasion Resistant wear plates (or AR Plate) or steel liners are used in many applications where friction between two parts
or materials creates degradation. Wear plate steel or AR plate may bolt onto a machine that slides in and out or up and down in
a manufacturing process, while they can also be found where manufactured parts or minerals are regularly rubbing or abrasively
contacting the machined plate.
Wear plate is a type of abrasion resistant steel plate that is considered extremely durable, especially under harsher
conditions. Digging and Mining companies face challenging requirements. Their equipment and tools are used to move dirt, rocks,
minerals and elements found within the ground, subjecting the steel parts to extremely abrasive conditions. Examples of steel
parts cut from AR plates used in the coal mining industry might include coal or rock chutes, as well as many other high wear
applications.
As a rule, AR plates are quenched and tempered steels designed to bear the wear and tear of continuously coarse or abrasive
work. Many Abrasion Resistant wear plates are designed to have a hard outside shell while having a softer inner core. Under
extreme impact, a T1 steel may be a better choice for many applications.
Wear plates can be made of medium steel, abrasion resistant grades ranging from A514 to AR400 or AR500, flame hardened grades
such as 1045 or 4140 or thru hardened materials such as A2, D2, S7 and others. Abrasion resistant wear plates are designed to
unbolt from your equipment, allowing you to re-grind and re-shim to the original height of your equipment or to replace with
another liner.
In some cases, Precision Grinding can modify your equipment to incorporate these liner plates when not in the original equipment
design. If your equipment has lost some efficiency or does not hold the same tolerances as new, inspect the worn parts. There
could be an easy and cost effective fix to the problem. A company’s existence depends upon productivity and the quality of its
products. Wear steel is used to create a longer life investment in equipment, such as:
- Wear Blades
- Choppers
- Scrapers
- Mining Tools
- Chippers
- Wear Rings
- Wear Segments
